Planting the Future: New Leaders in Activism for Food and Farm Justice

While young people have often been the drivers of social change, today’s new activists are collaborating in new and different ways. Motivated by deeply passionate ideals and techno-savvy skills, the modern food movement is rocking with creative solutions for improving social injustices embedded in our food system and raising consciousness in our communities.

Deeply rooted where they live and work, and joined by experienced sustainable agriculture and social justice activists, these folks are generating access to fresh, sustainably grown, affordable, and ethically produced food in poor and underserved areas. They are also working to promote healthy choices by challenging the hip-ness of fast-food and inspiring their peers to learn about how fresh, local, and organic foods promote good health and reduce the fast-food derived plagues of obesity and diabetes.

This panel will explore the unique processes, strategies, and programs young activists are using to reach out and talk about the food they eat, how it is grown, where it comes from, and how to support farmers and food producers who care about producing Real Food that nourishes people, communities, and the Earth.

Panelists:
Nikki Henderson, Slow Food USA
Anim Steel, The Food Project
Barbara Finnin, City Slicker Farms

Nikki Henderson is Special Assistant to the President for Slow Food USA. Slow Food is a global, grassroots movement that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment. Previously Nikki was part of the executive support team at Green for All in Oakland, CA a national organization working to build an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.

Anim Steel is the Director of National Programs at The Food Project where he manages the BLAST initiative, The Food Project’s effort to build a youth movement for sustainable agriculture and food justice. Anim’s previous experience in community building, economic development, and college admissions informs his work at The Food Project.

Barbara Finnin is the Executive Director of City Slicker Farms, a nonprofit that empowers West Oakland community members to meet the immediate and basic need for healthy organic food for themselves and their families by creating high-yield urban farms and backyard gardens. Barbara’s professional career has focused on community-level health, environmental, and social justice. Barbara came to City Slicker Farms from the Women’s Community Clinic where she served as the Volunteer Director, providing free health care for women by women.
